Fr. Charles Bouchard, OP, S.T.D

Prior Provincial
Dominican Friars
Province of St. Albert the Great

Fr. Charles Bouchard, OP, S.T.D., was elected Provincial of his community in June 2011. Previously he served as president and professor of moral theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis.  During his tenure at Aquinas, he was a member of the committee that designed the Ph.D. program in health care ethics at Saint Louis University and was instrumental in beginning the master’s program in health care mission at Aquinas. He also helped design a leadership formation program at Ascension Health and was a co-author of the white paper on theology of sponsorship for the Catholic Health Association.

In 2008, after 19 years at Aquinas, Fr. Bouchard assumed the role of vice president, theological education for Ascension Health where he was involved in theological formation for boards and senior executives.

In his current position as Provincial, Fr. Bouchard has leadership responsibility for 185 friars located in the United States and Bolivia. The province has ten parishes and campus ministries, a high school and a graduate school of theology across the upper Midwest, Colorado and New Mexico.

In addition to moral theology, Fr. Bouchard’s interests include ecclesial dimensions of sponsorship and the growing involvement of lay women and men in leadership of sponsored institutions. He maintains involvement in Catholic health care through periodic work for the Catholic Health Association, Alexian Brothers Health System and Franciscan Communities of Chicago. He serves on the boards of Fenwick High School, CHRISTUS Health and Aquinas Institute of Theology. He is currently editing a book entitled Health Care and the Church: Theological Issues.

Sensory Focus

This session we will focus on the sense of sound by exploring practices rooted in ancient traditions, sound baths and indigenous drumming. By immersing yourself in the rhythmic vibrations, we encourage you to connect with your inner self and the collective energy of your pod, cultivating mindfulness, emotional resilience, and a deeper understanding of the dynamics within your teams.

Session Pre-work

Ahead of the session, please spend 1-2 hours reviewing the pre-work.

Justice: The Work of Providence St. Joseph Health

  • Justice
  • Just
  • Advocate
  • Advocacy

  • All marginalized populations
  • Healthier, more equitable world

Consider how the work of our Advocacy and Social Responsibility team brings action to concepts. Consider how efforts animate the Providence Mission, vision, values and promise.

For your E-Portfolio:

Have you participated in any of the action opportunities offered by the Advocacy and Social Responsibility department?  Have you seen these efforts in your local service line, ministry or community? Add to your E-Portfolio pictures, an article, thoughts, videos, or any other depiction or opportunity related to Justice.

Sound: Hearing as Inspiration

Watch Drive (available on Providence Sharepoint), a film about cellist Joshua Roman and producer Ryan Hadlock. As a significant conduit for understanding the sense of hearing, music speaks to us. It tells us stories, communicates emotion, and in Joshua Roman’s case, helps process the experience of a global pandemic.  The Mission centered leader listens for the layers of sound: background noise to urgent voices.  Understanding the impact of sound, as with all the senses, enables us to tend to all aspects of our surroundings.

For your E-Portfolio:

Does music speak to you?  When and how?  As background noise, music can augment coffee houses.  At concerts, music can be the feature.  Music can provoke memories of younger years or frame a significant event such as a wedding or funeral.   How can you connect the inspiration of sound to your Mission-centered leadership?  Add to your E-Portfolio pictures, an article, thoughts, videos, or any other expression of the sense of hearing.
